St. Charles MMA
Shirt/Print Design
Saint Charles MMA is a mixed martial arts and jiu jitsu gym in St. Charles, Missouri. I've had the opportunity to be a part of a few projects with them.
The goal of the SCMMA shirt was to extablish two things: the traditional values upon which the gym is extablished, and the history of the gym as being the premier MMA gym in the area for over a decade. To accomplish these goals, I used the Japanese characters (jiu jitsu originating in Japan) for strength, family, growth, and respect. I also employed a vintage aesthetic with a distressed effect over the whole graphic, and included the "established" date of the gym. In talking to the gym members, I determined that the color scheme evoked feelings of vintage martial arts as well.
The Kelly "Wildfire" D'Angelo shirt was a tribute to a friend and colleague of the fighter, and was used in fundraising. The fighter wanted to use elements from her career as a firefighter in the shirt, and the challenge was to create a shirt that would both be exciting as a fight tee while also being an appropriate tribute to her fallen colleague.
The House Rules piece was an update to a hand-written sign in the gym. The goal was to create something fun that added character to the atmosphere, while also appearing professional and polished.
